Kitchen Remodeling: How To Remodel Your Kitchen
Remodeling Your Kitchen is one of the best ways you can add value to your home, but depending on the scale of the task you are about to tackle, it can take lots of work, it can take lots of money and it can take lots of planning. The kitchen is one of the most complex rooms in your home, and a remodeled kitchen which has been well thought out, planned and executed can instantly raise the value of your home, make you the envy of your friends who have been trying to talk their other halves into it for years, and on a more practical level . . . provide you with a much more effective cooking area.
Many people have a dream of their “perfect kitchen”, but how many of us actually achieve it? I remember longing for a beautiful new range cooking stove a few years ago and my dreams eventually came true – it looked terrific and added a certain “farmhouse chic” to my otherwise very ordinary kitchen, but did it improve my cooking – no? Did it make my cakes light and fluffy – no? Did I love it just the same – yes! Did it make me the envy of my friends – well, it’s funny how a slightly grander one appeared in Shirley’s kitchen only a few weeks later, which had been “on order” for months . . . yeah, right!
One thing which you do need to consider before tackling a kitchen remodeling project is (apart from the potential enormity of the task) that some kitchens can very quickly become outdated . . . so unless you plan to remodel your kitchen every couple of years then it’s worth thinking about whether the latest fashion kitchen cabinets are actually practical, or whether something more traditional would be a wiser choice.
How To Remodel Your Kitchen
For the majority of people the fun part of remodeling the kitchen is not in ripping out that old kitchen sink which has been stained beyond repair for years or eventually sending your old noisy refrigerator to the garbage . . . it starts way before the dust, the dirt and the inconvenience (‘cos there’ll be plenty of that) . . . it starts with the designing of your new kitchen . . . this is the real fun part. You get to plan and be creative whilst your house is still clean, in one piece and it is still possible to cook a meal (you could be getting well acquainted with the local pizza delivery guy quite soon).
Kitchen Remodeling Plan – there are five general kitchen remodeling plans, depending on the scale of the task you’re willing to undertake (and afford), and the size and shape of your kitchen – there’s the one wall design, the corridor shape design, the L-shape design, the double L-shape design and the U-shape design. Which one is yours? Well if you don’t know, you’d better find out before you start thinking about a kitchen remodel.
The potential scope of a kitchen remodel is enormous, there’s so much to think about because, unlike some other rooms in the house, the kitchen is the hub of the family and an efficient and well planned kitchen can make a real difference to your life, as well as to the value of your home. Think about;
- Kitchen floor – do you want carpet (warm and comfortable but not very practical for spills), floor tiles (great for sweeping and mopping but can be hard and cold), do you want your kitchen floor to be linoleum? The kitchen floor is only one part of the kitchen remodeling puzzle.
- Kitchen walls – natural stone or brick walls can look nice in the right type of kitchen, but are not always the easiest surface to keep clean, what about tiles, great to clean but can be expensive and difficult to replace , what about simply painting the kitchen walls, yes, it can soon begin to look shabby but is pretty easy to clean and can be repainted without too much major surgery. What about half tiles, half paint . . . decisions, decisions, decisions.
- Kitchen windows – are you happy with the positioning of the windows, or do you want to move ‘em so that you can look outside when you wash the dishes, (in your newly positioned kitchen sink)? Do you fancy a great big picture window to look out over the stunning view over the sea, or is your present window letting in enough light and views for you? What about blinds and drapes?
- Kitchen sinks – talking about kitchen sinks, you might be surprised at the wide range of kitchen sinks which are available these days, and the kitchen sink can make a big difference to the whole ambience of your newly remodeled kitchen. Copper sinks are very classy and can give your kitchen a high-end look, but then again some people head more towards the old fashioned pot sinks, stainless steel sinks . . . left hand drainers, right hand drainers, double drainers, double sinks, mixer faucets, individual faucets, filtered drinking water faucet . . . help, the list is endless! Next time somebody tells you that they have “everything but the kitchen sink” you’ll know why!
- Kitchen cabinets – your choice of kitchen cabinets is going to make a big difference to the overall appearance of your newly remodeled kitchen too. Aesthetically pleasing is essential, but so is a little old fashioned practicality. You need cabinets (and cabinet doors) which are spacious, well designed, well fitted, easy to clean, easy to reach. What color? What design? What about the door handles? Aye, aye, aye . . . do you wish you’d never started? Just hang in there . . . it’ll be worth it in the end . . . trust me!
- Kitchen work surfaces – the right kitchen work surface can make a big impact on the overall appearance of your kitchen too . . . something tough and easy to clean is a must, as well as it looking great of course.
- Kitchen appliances – are what makes your kitchen even more user friendly. Will you keep some of the your old kitchen appliances, your heart might say no but your budget might say yes. What about opting for built in appliances? Do you want your refrigerator, dishwasher, deep freeze and microwave to be hidden behind closed cabinet doors, you know the sort of thing, you have to open every cupboard door just to find where you keep the milk until you get used to it yourself . . . great fun! Okay, who put the butter in the dishwasher again!
Remodeling Your Kitchen
Now that you’ve made some important decisions about your new kitchen remodel, it’s time to think about how you’re going to go about it in practical terms. Will you do the work yourself? Will you hire a contrator? Are you going to do any demolition work involving major construction . . . knocking down walls (you do know which are the load-bearing walls I hope . . . or is your kitchen remodeling project more repair than replace?
